Nominate your fellow alumni for the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Alumni Agent of Change Award
For more than 70 years, UBC Pharm Sci alumni have had a positive impact in their communities through innovative contributions to science, health care, technology, education and so much more. A vital member of the health care team, the work they do influences the day-to-day life of patients, the policies of the provinces and countries they work in, the education of the next generation, and the health of the world’s population through the development of innovative treatments. The professional roles of Pharm Sci alumni is ever changing and adapting to the needs of those they help.
Each year, the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Alumni Agent of Change Award recognizes one outstanding member of the Pharm Sci alumni family for their remarkable achievements in a clinical, community, education, or research field. Previous recipients include John Shaske, BSc(Pharm)’78 who received the award in 2016 for his continued commitment to innovating care in practice and placing the health of his patients at the centre of his practice at Howe Sound Pharmacy Ltd. Through his focus on creating a patient-centric approach and encouraging his colleagues to do the same, he sets the bar high for future generations of pharmacists. His tenured involvement with the College of Pharmacists of BC is also a testament to the value he places on upholding a high standard of practice and interest in the evolution of licensing policy.
This year, triple Pharm Sci alumnus Gary Lopaschuck, BSc(Pharm)’78, MSc’80, PhD’83 received the award in recognition of his distinguished career as a cardiovascular researcher, mentor and innovator. He is a distinguished professor at the University of Alberta and Senior Director of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. His multidisciplinary approach to research allows him to take his specialized knowledge in one area of medicine and apply it to another. As well he is recognized an outstanding supervisor to his graduate students. His company, Metabolic Modulators Research Ltd. is developing novel drugs to treat heart disease.
Nominations for the 2018 UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Alumni Agent of Change Award are now open. The deadline for nominations is September 29, 2017 and the Alumni Agent of Change website has more information including a downloadable nomination form. Nominate your colleagues and fellow Pharm Sci alumni for this competitive and prestigious award. We know they are doing remarkable things every day and we want to hear all about them.
The recipient will be celebrated in 2018 at an event hosted by Dean Michael Coughtrie, which brings together all members of the Pharm Sci community, including fellow alumni, current students, and faculty members. It is an evening of inspiration and connection, as the recipient presents the story of their professional journey, and one of celebration for the Pharm Sci family.

As the alumni relations manager with UBC’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Amanda is responsible for engaging with Pharm Sci alumni, creating programming to nourish their pride, and matching them with opportunities to volunteer and contribute to their alma mater. She has over 10 years of experience in designing and executing events for alumni, donors, students and community members in a post-secondary environment, with the goal of creating lasting connections, supporting professional development and recognizing outstanding achievements.
