Seeking BC Pharmacists’ Feedback: UBC Proposed Pharmacy Professional Master’s Degree Program
The Canadian pharmacy education landscape has seen significant changes marked by the replacement of the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (B.Sc. Pharm) with the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) as the entry-to-practice degree. In BC, these changes occurred amidst evolving pharmacy residency programs and the closure of the UBC Graduate PharmD Program. The closure of the UBC Graduate PharmD Program, which was a major source of professional leaders for over two decades, represents a loss of a path that has been meeting some but not all of those needs (primarily within the in-patient care sector). Although some pharmacists pursue residency training or non-pharmacy-specific masters programs (e.g. MBA, MHA), there is no longer a pharmacy-specific educational path for pharmacists to become professional leaders. This gap presents a new opportunity.
To fill the gap with a pharmacy-specific educational path for BC pharmacists to become professional leaders, the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is developing a new pharmacy Professional Master's degree program focused on leadership, patient and professional education, practice in the primary care setting, and advanced topics in healthcare delivery and therapeutics. The Faculty is seeking feedback from BC pharmacists, which will assist in the design and development of the new program.
