he Department of Medicine at McMaster University has joined with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC to create a pharmacist-centred module within the OSCAR Electronic Medical Record.
OSCAR – which stands for Open Source Clinical Application Resource – was created at McMaster University and distributed to community clinicians at no cost. While the software has paid dividends for physicians, it is clear that better patient health outcomes are a result of a collaborative effort across health care professionals, which is why work is underway to create a pharmacist module.
“An electronic medical record designed for pharmacists, working as part of collaborative care teams, will truly benefit patient care by improving how pharmacists can do their work,” said Lisa Dolovich, professor and associate chair of research in McMaster University’s Department of Family Medicine in a statement.
Development of the new module will take between six months to a year to complete, and it will be shared with pharmacists and clinicians across the OSCAR platform. Software firm Colcamex Resources will be building the pharmacist module.
OSCAR is currently in use across Canada and supports 1.5 million patients.
