The College would like to clarify the current status of the Certification for Drug Administration by Injection and Intranasal Route.
In order for a qualified pharmacist to administer an immunization by intranasal route, several pieces of pharmacy legislation had to be updated.
The College submitted amendments to its Health Professions Act Bylaws to the Ministry of Health, which were approved on October 8, 2015. However, the Pharmacists Regulation is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health, and has not yet been updated. The Pharmacists Regulation overrides the College's Bylaws; therefore they are not in force and we cannot authorize qualified pharmacists to administer immunizations by intranasal route at this time.
We are hopeful that the Pharmacists’ Regulation will be updated soon, but in the meantime the College is able to authorize new applicants to administer immunizations by injection. Only intranasal route is not permitted at this time.
The College will ensure that that you are notified as soon as new information becomes available.
