Guest Post: Invitation to Participate – Understanding Scope of Practice Expansion in Pharmacy (U-Prep)
A team of Canadian researchers, led by Drs Natalie Crown (University of Toronto) and Teri Charrois (University of British Columbia), is conducting a NEW study focused on exploring the perspectives of community pharmacists across Canada on implementing an expanded scope of services within their practice.
The goal of the project is two-fold: a) gather feedback on from community pharmacists with lived experience as frontline care providers to explore their perspectives of expanded scope services and b) use the information provided to develop guidance on the implementation of expanded roles to share with policy makers and key stakeholders to support pharmacists and pharmacy teams implement these expanded services. Understanding the jurisdictionally specific enablers and barriers that front-line community pharmacists currently face is critical to ensuring the success of expanded scope initiatives.
The project’s initial phase will build context to allow exploration of the experience of community pharmacists who have faced legislative changes to an expanded scope of practice in three provinces: British Columbia, Ontario, and Nova Scotia. The project aims to conduct up to 20 interviews with community pharmacists practicing within British Columbia to understand their experiences and views about their experience implementing expanded scope of practice.
Who is eligible to participate?
To be eligible to participate, you must meet the following criteria:
- Community pharmacist practicing in British Columbia
- Able to read and speak in English.
What will you be asked to do?
If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to do the following:
- Complete a brief screening questionnaire to determine if you are eligible to participate.
- Read and complete the consent form (5 minutes).
- Participate in a one-on-one interview that may last up to 1 hour in the way you prefer (i.e., online or by phone). The interview will be audio and/ or video recorded.
- The interview will be scheduled at times that work best for you.
- Taking part in the study will not cost you anything.
Will you be compensated for participating in the study?
You will be provided with a $100 electronic gift card to thank you for participating.

Dr. Natalie Crown, is an Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream) and the Director of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Teri Charrois, is Associate Dean of practice innovation and Professor of Teaching in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia.
