I’m proud to be a pharmacy professional in BC. Pharmacy is an honourable profession with noble goals and holds the trust and respect of the public we serve. To be a pharmacist and able to live in a beautiful province like BC is such a treat!
The trust and respect that we enjoy isn’t something that comes easy. We have to work at it. The public trusts us to put their wellness and safety ahead of our personal or business interests; to govern ourselves; to set our own rules and membership. This isn’t easy at times, as we have to establish rules of conduct and ethics that define our behavior. Sometimes we discipline those who don’t follow the rules and that isn’t fun or easy. It can be hard work for both the staff and the volunteer committee members. We do it because we need to, in order to maintain the integrity and credibility of the profession. Other committees guide the profession in various areas, like our ethics or the rules that we make for ourselves. Many of you generously volunteer your time to serve. Thank you. We’re sending out a call for volunteers for our committees now. If you are interested, please let us know.
I’m proud to let people know that I’m a pharmacist. I proudly display my College certificate on the wall in my office. It looks good. It has the College crest that was originally designed back around 1912. It looks very official and says that I am a member of an exclusive, professional club. This is an honour and a privilege. Society trusts us as knowledgeable professionals, to dispense pharmaceuticals and advice, as well as to be the gatekeepers for narcotics and other prescription drugs.
We have just recently started using the College crest again and are getting ready to produce the first new batch of certificates using it. Pharmacy professionals proudly display these in their place of work as testimony to their membership in a fine club with a long tradition of public service.
To those who will be getting a new certificate, I hope you cherish it. To those who already have theirs on the wall, I hope you walk past it on a busy day and take a moment to reflect on what it is that you – what we all – do. Pharmacy isn’t just a profession, it’s a community, and I’m proud to be a part of it.
P.S.: As this story was going to press, I heard the news about Target. Our registration department has started to receive calls and help guide registrants through next steps. Call us at 1-800-663-1940 if you need information about closures or any more information – we’re here to help.
