André Picard @picardonhealth recently tweeted an article from the Washington Post entitled A doctor discovers an important question patients should be asked. Google it. It was a thoughtful piece, written by a family practice physician about his realization that the most important thing for him to ask his patients is “What are your goals for care, and how can I help you?” It made me ponder if the same approach could be valuable in Pharmacy. Would pharmacists find this approach to be similarly successful in meeting the needs of patients more effectively? What would happen if we used these words, oriented towards drug therapy, and tailored our response to meet the patient’s needs. Specifically, I’m thinking about over the counter drugs. What a great way to initiate a conversation! This is a great example of the value of Twitter in disseminating information. The only reason that I came across this article is because I “follow” Andre Picard. He follows me too.
Another great way to use Twitter is through the hashtags. Check out #PAM2015. It did a great job of raising the awareness of pharmacy’s impact on patients as part of Pharmacy Awareness Month. Lots of great messages about pharmacy practice in both the community and hospitals.
As a College, we also follow the other colleges and health care organizations across Canada. It’s important for us to keep in touch with global trends and share their relevant news with you.
If you aren’t on Twitter yet, I would encourage you to give it a try. It’s not just for the young. I’m old and find it a useful source of information. You don’t even have to post anything. Lots of people use it as a way to stay current with the news of the day. Follow the College @bcpharmacists, or me @bobnakagawa. We continually tweet information that you need to know about the College. It’s a great way for us to keep in touch with you without cluttering up your email!
