New Professional Practice Policy for Injectable Opioid Agonist Treatment and an accompanying policy guide will come into effect on September 1, 2018.
The scope of nurse practitioners (NP) was recently expanded to include prescribing opioid agonist treatment (OAT) drugs. This change is part of province-wide efforts to address the opioid overdose crisis and builds on NPs’ existing authority to prescribe controlled drugs and substances.
On January 1, 2018, amendments to Professional Practice Policy – 66, including changing its name from “Methadone Maintenance Treatment” to “Opioid Agonist Treatment,” come into effect. These amendments also include the introduction of new policy guides for buprenorphine/naloxone, and slow-release oral morphine.
