“Treating and responding to addictions is a complex challenge,” said Health Minister Terry Lake at the announcement on August 6, 2014. “It not only affects that person, but it affects the families, friends, loved ones, and coworkers.”
This investment, which matches a $3 million dollar investment from Goldcorp. Inc. made in 2012, will fund the expansion of the current provincial education and research program. In addition, further funding was secured from the US National Institute on Drug Abuse for clinical trials of addiction medications.
British Columbia will pilot a 3-year clinical trial for Vivitrol, an injection used to treat opioid and alcohol addictions. The drug was approved and has been in use in the U.S. since 2006.
