Indigenous Cultural Competency Online Training Program (ICC) is a course that assesses Aboriginal cultural knowledge and introduces practical communications strategies. Health care professionals have a specific training session, Core ICC Health, which presents real-world scenarios and solutions for health care professionals working throughout British Columbia.
ICC training features audio and video clips that cover Aboriginal-specific history and capture personal experiences. British Columbia is home to more than 200 First Nations, and it is important that this history is recognized.
Participants complete the 8-hour online training in cohorts and are led by a facilitator. Evaluations are presented through a combination of quizzes, discussions and personal reflections. Once completed, each participant receives a certificate and is able to access post-training resources such as additional training modules and continued support from their facilitator.
Developed by the Provincial Health Authority of British Columbia (PHSA), the training is mandatory for all Health Authority and Ministry of Health employees. The training was created as a result of the Transformative Change Accord First Nations Health Plan requirement to increase cultural competency within Health Authorities.
Core ICC Health training is eligible towards CE credits.
Patients rely on pharmacists to advise them on safe drug therapy. As such, all pharmacy professionals should conduct themselves in a respectful manner. For more information on ICC and how it could benefit your work, please visit www.culturalcompetency.ca.
