Chronic pain can often be a life-long battle. Pharmacists play a key role in chronic pain management, and Pain BC now offers a continuing education program for community pharmacists to better evaluate and manage long-term pain.
The program is currently pending CCCEP accreditation but is the first of its kind in Canada.
With this program, BC Pain aims to improve patient safety and health outcomes, enhance patient care with respect to chronic pain, and improve pain management through shared clinical care.
The program is formatted as an 8-hour workshop that works through 5 modules:
- Understanding and communicating with the patient in pain
- Pathogenesis of pain and assessment of pain
- Pain management
- Opioid related issues
- Management of the chronic pain patient
It is delivered in-person and features lectures, case studies, breakout discussions and follow-up monitoring sessions.
This project is partially funded by a grant from the College’s clinical skills grant fund.
