Effective September 1st, 2024, bylaws are in effect that require pharmacies display the 'What You Can Expect from Your Pharmacy Visit' poster in its original, unmodified form. This poster was designed to enhance transparency and trust by clearly communicating the standards of care that the public can expect from their pharmacy team.

PRP INSIGHTS: Areas of Non-Compliance for Pharmacist Prescribing for Minor Ailments and Contraception (PPMAC) Part 2

Pharmacists in BC have been providing minor ailment and contraception prescribing services under PPMAC since June 2023. To ensure compliance with the regulatory standards that enable and govern this practice, Compliance Officers have been reviewing PPMAC services while conducting Community Pharmacy Practice Reviews since October 2023.

To improve compliance and awareness of the standards, a previous article was published that highlighted some early observations of non-compliance under the PPMAC framework. This article is a follow-up installment to share additional examples of non-compliance that have been observed by Compliance Officers.

Guest Post: Cefuroxime is a Safe Alternative for Penicillin Allergic Patients

In light of the increasing concern over antibiotic misuse, particularly the overprescription of clindamycin in dentistry, the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and the UBC Therapeutics Initiative (TI) have collaborated to provide dentists with prescribing Portraits aimed at improving antibiotic use. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians play an important role in determining the safety of alternative antibiotics and communicating with patients. Luckily, safe alternatives to clindamycin exist for patients with true penicillin allergies, including the beta-lactam antibiotic cefuroxime.

Cultural Safety and Humility Practice Standard Coming Soon

The College is currently working to implement an Indigenous Cultural Safety, Humility, and Anti-racism Practice Standard in order to set clear expectations for registrants on the provision of providing culturally safe and anti-racist care for Indigenous patients and clients. The Board will be reviewing the new practice standard at its September Board meeting and, if approved, is expected to come into effect in September 2022

The new standard will be adapted with permission from the Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility and Anti-racism Practice Standard, developed collaboratively by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day

June is National Indigenous History Month and today, Tuesday, June 21st 2022, marks the 26th annual National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. On this day, and throughout the month of June, BC’s health professionals are reminded to take some time to celebrate, reflect on, and learn about the rich history, heritage, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Communities.

Jurisprudence Exam Modernization Project Completed

The College’s Jurisprudence Exam Modernization Project (JEMP) is now complete. After initial postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the JEMP started in March 2021, and the exam development process was completed in April 2022.

New College Standards for Sterile Compounding Coming Soon

At it’s April 2022 meeting, the College Board approved amendments to the Pharmacy Operations and Drug Scheduling Act (PODSA) and the Health Professions Act (HPA) to adopt the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) model standards for sterile compounding as the updated College Standards for Sterile Compounding.

The College Standards for Sterile Compounding will come into effect on July 4, 2022.
