Earlier this year, there was a bit of a buzz on Twitter regarding pharmacies that sell homeopathic products. An Ontario health researcher caused quite a stir, criticizing a pharmacist for recommending a homeopathic product to treat her child’s fever. 

Last month, I was honoured to be given the Alumni Agent of Change award by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC. As the recipient, I was asked to prepare a “TED style” presentation on my career and how I became an Agent of Change. I touched on several points that I think might be of interest to you, including the importance of mentorship, lessons from visionary leaders in pharmacy, how pharmacy has changed over the last 40 years, and my perspectives on these changes...

Happy New Year! I have a pretty good feeling about 2018. As you know, 2017 was an eventful year that, in many ways, set the stage for more of the same this year.

The practice of pharmacy is in a constant state of flux. From changes in healthcare legislation, to new practices, knowledge and research, pharmacy practice is always advancing at a rapid pace. And as professionals, we have to keep up!

The College has received a number of inquiries about when our registrants are free from their responsibilities as pharmacy professionals. This seems like an odd question, but it’s come up more than once and in a number of different contexts...

The right to vote is a foundation of democracy. It’s based on the assumption that all those affected by a decision have the right to participate in the making of that decision, and yet it’s something that so many of us take for granted...

Summertime. And the livin’ is easy. George Gershwin was right. 

I attended a meeting of the Pharmacy Leaders of Tomorrow (also known as PLoT) last week. This is a grassroots group of young pharmacists in the community who get together to talk about the profession and stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship. 

This year we’ll be celebrating our 125th birthday! We’re planning a big celebration in Kelowna in September - stay tuned for more details. I hope that you’ll be able to join us.

Pharmacy has changed almost completely since that time. The practice is different, the drugs are different, the public that we serve is different…the whole world has changed. Some things haven’t changed though. We are still a recognized profession that serves as the drug and drug therapy expert to society.
