The College would like to remind pharmacists that registered dietitians can recommend multi-vitamins and/or minerals to patients as part of a therapeutic diet.
Pharmacists may release multi-vitamin and/or mineral products from the pharmacy on the recommendation of a dietitian, to then be administered by a nurse. This exchange does not require a prescription as these products are Schedule III.
In March 2013, the College of Dietitians, along with the College of Pharmacists, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses, the College of Registered Nurses, and the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses produced a Joint Statement on the topic of a dietitian’s authority to recommend products.
