Regulatory Education Module for Pharmacist Prescribing for Minor Ailments and Contraception Now Available
In order to improve patient access to care, and expand the capacity of BC’s primary care providers, beginning on June 1, 2023, pharmacists in BC will have the authority to make a diagnosis and prescribe medications specified in Schedule I of the Drug Schedules Regulation, for minor ailments and contraception.

In order to prepare pharmacists to provide prescribing services to patients in BC, the College, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and UBC's Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development, has developed a mandatory Regulatory Education Module that can be completed in advance of June 1, 2023.
The Regulatory Education Module is available to all pharmacists in BC at no additional cost.
Mandatory Completion and Self-Declaration of CompletionPrior to making a diagnosis or prescribing for minor ailments or contraception, pharmacists MUST complete the Regulatory Education Module and self-declare completion of this training through their eServices account. Note: Even after completion of the Regulatory Education Module, pharmacists are NOT permitted to prescribe until June 1, 2023. |
This module introduces the new regulatory framework which enables pharmacists in BC to prescribe for minor ailments and contraception in a safe, effective, and ethical manner. This regulatory framework has been established collaboratively by the College and the Ministry of Health.
Upon completion of this Regulatory Education Module, you will be able to:
- List the pharmacist’s professional responsibilities when making a diagnosis or prescribing for minor ailments and contraception
- Describe the Pharmacists Regulation and the authority that enables pharmacists to make a diagnosis and prescribe for minor ailments and contraception
- Describe the Standards, Limits and Conditions that govern pharmacists making a diagnosis and prescribing for minor ailments and contraception
- Apply your knowledge of what is authorized in the Pharmacists Regulation and the College’s Standards, Limits and Conditions to provide safe, effective, and ethical care
- Identify and locate applicable resources available to support pharmacists when making a diagnosis or prescribing for minor ailments and contraception
